Implant Dentures vs All-on-X vs Regular Dentures: How to Choose
This comparison is general information. Whether implants suit you depends on your health and jaw bone, which your dentist or surgeon confirms.
Choosing between implant dentures vs All-on-X vs regular dentures is one of the biggest decisions denture patients in Vernon and Kelowna make. All three give you a full smile back, but they feel very different when you eat, they need different upkeep, and the cost ranges a long way.
Below we profile each option the same way, so you can compare them side by side, then give you five questions to narrow it down. It comes from the team at Kasper Denture Clinic, where we make all three.
The real difference in one sentence
When people compare implant dentures vs All-on-X, the real question is removable versus fixed. Snap-in implant dentures come out at night and cost far less, while All-on-X stays in like natural teeth and is the bigger investment. Regular dentures are the starting point for both, and they suit many people perfectly well on their own.
One thing that is the same for all three: a dentist or oral surgeon places any implants, and a denturist like Jason designs, makes and fits the teeth that sit on top. That is why many patients see both, with us coordinating the timing.
Option 1: regular full dentures
A removable set of teeth on a gum-coloured base. The upper denture is held by suction against the roof of your mouth, and the lower sits on your gums.
- Best for people who want an affordable, proven option or are not candidates for implants
- How it feels secure on top for most people, while lowers can move because there is less ridge to grip
- Upkeep taken out nightly, with a reline every couple of years as your gums change
- What drives the cost the type of teeth and how they are processed, with no surgery involved
If your lower denture is the problem, a lower suction denture is worth asking about before you jump to implants.

A removable denture that clicks onto two or more dental implants, so it stays put until you take it out.
- Best for people whose lower denture slips, or who want much more security without fixed teeth
- How it feels solid when you chew and talk, with no adhesive needed
- Upkeep taken out nightly for cleaning, and the small attachments are replaced as they wear
- What drives the cost how many implants you need, usually two to four for a lower, and whether your current denture can be adapted
For many patients this is the sweet spot. Our page on implant dentures in the Okanagan walks through the process step by step.
Option 3: All-on-X fixed teeth
A full arch of teeth fixed to four or more implants. It stays in your mouth and is only removed by your clinic for maintenance.
- Best for people who want the closest thing to natural teeth and have the bone and health for implants
- How it feels like your own teeth, and many people forget it is there
- Upkeep brushed in place like natural teeth, with professional cleanings and check-ups
- What drives the cost the number of implants, any bone work and the materials used for the bridge
Five questions to help you decide
- What bothers you most right now? A loose lower, the look of your smile, or not being able to eat what you like.
- Are you comfortable with surgery? Implant options need a dentist or oral surgeon to place them and around 3 months to heal.
- How do you feel about taking teeth out at night? If you never want to, All-on-X is the fit.
- What does your budget allow? Ask for estimates on more than one option, along with financing through iFinance or Dentalcard.
- Do you have enough jaw bone? Your surgeon confirms this with an X-ray or scan.
What recovery and adjustment look like
With regular dentures there is no surgery, so the adjustment is mostly getting used to speaking and eating with them, which takes most people a few weeks. With implant options, the implants usually need around 3 months to bond with the jawbone before the final teeth go on. Many people wear an immediate denture during that time, so they are never without teeth.
Whichever option you choose, plan on regular check-ups. Dentures need relines as your gums change, snap-in attachments wear and get replaced, and fixed teeth need professional cleanings around the implants.
Can you start with dentures and upgrade later?
Yes, and many people do. A well-made set of full dentures can often be adapted to clip onto implants later, which spreads the cost over time. If you are having teeth removed, an immediate denture gives you teeth on day one while you decide. You can book any of this directly, since you do not need a referral to see a denturist, and if cost is a concern our guide to CDCP dentures explains what the federal plan can cover.
