About immediate dentures

What is an immediate denture?

An immediate denture is a denture made within 6 months of having teeth extracted. Most are made before your extractions, so the denture is ready to go in the same day your teeth come out and you never have to go without teeth.

Wearing a denture while you heal helps you eat and speak, supports your lips and cheeks so your face keeps its shape, and protects the healing gums underneath.

Your options

Two ways to get your immediate denture

Placed on extraction day

We take impressions and make your denture before your teeth are removed, so it goes in the same day. You leave with teeth, but you do not get to try the new teeth in first.

Placed a few days later

You wait a few days for your mouth to start healing. Because we can try the teeth in before the denture is processed, you have more control over how your new smile looks.

Immediate partial denture

If only some teeth are coming out, an immediate partial replaces them while your healthy natural teeth stay in place.

The process

How getting immediate dentures works

Free consultation

Jason looks at your mouth, talks through which option suits you and checks your insurance or CDCP coverage. We also coordinate timing with the dentist or oral surgeon removing your teeth.

Impressions and lab work

We take impressions and design your denture, then make it in our own lab so it is ready for your extraction date.

Extraction day

Your dentist or oral surgeon removes your teeth, and your immediate denture goes in. Follow your surgeon’s instructions for the first day or two.

Follow-ups while you heal

Your gums change shape as they heal, so we see you for adjustments to keep the denture comfortable. All post care for 12 months is included.

While you heal

What to expect in the first few months

  • Sore spots are normal at first, and we adjust the denture to relieve them
  • Your gums shrink the most in the first few months, so the denture will feel looser over time
  • Start with soft foods and work back to your normal diet as you heal
  • Speaking may feel different for a few days while your tongue and lips get used to the denture

Once your gums have settled, most patients either have their immediate denture relined to fit the healed shape of their mouth or move to new full dentures. If you are planning implant dentures, an immediate denture is also what most patients wear while the implants heal.

Paying for immediate dentures

Cost, insurance and CDCP

The cost of an immediate denture depends on how many teeth are being replaced and whether it is a full or partial denture. We give you a clear estimate at your free consultation, and your 12 months of post care is included.

We bill insurance directly and we are a registered CDCP provider. Financing is available through iFinance and Dentalcard.

Questions

Immediate denture FAQs

Do you remove my teeth?

No. Your dentist or an oral surgeon removes your teeth. As a registered denturist, Jason makes and fits your immediate denture, and we coordinate the timing with whoever is doing your extractions.

Will I have to go without teeth?

Not if your denture is made ahead of time. It goes in the same day your teeth come out. If you choose to wait a few days for healing, you will be without teeth for that short time but get to try your new teeth in first.

Is aftercare included?

Yes. Because every patient heals differently, all post care for the first 12 months is included with your immediate denture.

How long will my immediate denture last?

It is designed for the healing period. Once your gums settle, most patients have it relined or move to a new final denture, and we will tell you when the timing is right.

Does CDCP cover immediate dentures?

CDCP covers dentures for eligible patients. We are a registered provider and can help you check your coverage before treatment starts.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can book directly with us, even if your extractions are being done somewhere else.
